Five of Five, Eventually
Day thirty-four of ninety: I sent the finance questions myself, deleted a reel I had just built for breaking my own rule, and chased a story that was not there until it was.
Day thirty-three ended with italics fired, the board honestly recounted at one hundred and six open, and yesterday's dispatch still sitting in my own vetting queue. Day thirty-four did not reduce the queue. It added character development. My calendar was almost empty, just my morning glow drink and my fibre at night, which in this house means the inbox gets to be the calendar instead.
The morning belonged to the finance cleanup, and I stopped delegating the tone. All the questions we have been carrying in separate threads, the second round ones and the cleanup findings, went out as one combined list, from me myself, not passed through anybody else, copied to the two people who need to see it. Eight questions, one reply, before the final report gets locked. Then in the afternoon I sent the follow up I actually cared about: we have not agreed any fees for the work going forward, that conversation starts only after the cleanup is finalised, and it will be negotiated properly, offline. Nobody was asked to propose anything. Boundaries, in writing, with my signature under them.
Then stories, because stories do not respect finance hours. Five new history cards went up for review: a root beer stand that became a hotel empire, auctions held by candlelight, a dome that looks like it is floating, rice that was domesticated in West Africa thousands of years ago, and palm oil working as factory lubricant before it was famous for anything else. I flagged the first card immediately: no visual. The scene got generated, a proper 1920s soda fountain, except the sign in the background confidently says 1924 while my copy correctly says 1927. We posted anyway, with the correct date in the words, because abeg, the sign painter is not on payroll. I said post all. Four landed. The fifth, the candlelight one, got interrupted by a service restart mid post and simply vanished into the internet's pocket.
While that story was missing, I was busy policing my own formats. The Thursday reel for this page, the one about realising I am the delay because everything waits on my one yes, got built in the shiny AI background style. It looked fine. It was also completely off brief. This page is relatable founder content in my own clips, with the text carrying the message, not AI rooms pretending to be my life. So I deleted it. The reel, the caption copy, the whole build. Deleted at my own word. And then I closed the other door too: the film it myself blueprint got skipped, full stop. Some ideas have to die twice before they stay dead.
The building product's carousel had the opposite journey: it started too thin and got more human. More detail on every slide, a real photo background of a builder and a buyer actually looking at a checklist together, the follow slide removed completely, and the ending changed from begging for a follow to asking a real closing question. Then I caught the logo, or rather, the thing pretending to be the logo. Typed letters in a row are not a logo, abeg. Use the correct one. The real logo went on, that version got my one word, post, and it is live now, verified, four slides, question and all. Same lesson, other direction, with the farm reel from yesterday, where I had to ask where the caption was because it was living inside a file instead of in front of me. Deliver the thing itself, not a pointer to it. That rule is now tattooed on the process.
Smaller threads moved in the margins and I am collecting them before they pretend they did not. The creator tracking code that was pending yesterday is now created and sitting with my COO for review. My accountant chased the retail partner this morning for the outstanding balance plus two months of missing manifests. The sale analysis I have been waiting on landed on my desk for review. And an awards invitation arrived inviting the beauty brand to book a display in Lagos in December, which is a lovely problem to have and still a decision I have not made.
Day thirty-four ends with the scoreboard reading: eight finance questions sent in one list by me, one fee boundary sent in my own framing, five stories drafted, four posted on the first try and the fifth confirmed live by evening, one reel built and deleted for breaking my own rule and its blueprint skipped for good measure, one carousel made more human, given its real logo, and posted live, one weekend guide drafted for Dallas and waiting on my vetting. Still hanging: yesterday's dispatch finally on the record ahead of this one, the women's event on the first still blocked on a partner's details, the campaign name still wobbling, my costing sheet review still due, and tomorrow is Gate 2, the big sign off after the scorecard, lip liner results due, templates and barcodes all landing on the same Friday. And the missing story, abeg, was confirmed live after all, sitting where it was supposed to be since the morning while we were preparing its obituary. Five of five. Eventually.
