Hold The Rule

Day forty-one of ninety: I parked a trip until May, watched a sorted bank unsort itself by email, and turned down a very large grant rather than break a rule I set for myself.

Day forty-one of ninety: I parked a trip until May, watched a sorted bank unsort itself by email, and turned down a very large grant rather than break a rule I set for myself.

Yesterday ended with the word sorted doing a lot of heavy lifting. Salary paid, bank sorted, grocery reel waiting on my call, and a trip decision sitting in a four o'clock block with visa documents due today and nothing booked. Thursday started as day three of a water fast, which is the day your body stops negotiating and just sends you invoices in the form of headaches. Everything today got decided by a hungry woman. The decisions were still good.

First, the trip is parked. Not cancelled in anger, not booked in panic, parked properly until May next year. That one move killed about six deadlines at once: no visa submission on Friday, no hotel confirmation needed for every night, no paying for a night nobody sleeps in. Nothing was ever booked, so there is nothing to cancel, which is the cleanest ending a stressful plan can have. A holiday should not need project management, and now, until May, it does not.

Then the bank unsorted itself. Yesterday I said sorted and I meant it. This morning the same bank emailed again, thank you for the information, after further review more information is needed, please log in and complete another form by mid November. Sorted lasted less than twenty-four hours, which is still longer than some of my New Year resolutions. In the same inbox economy, a software tool that charged me for downloads returned half a credit today and told me I can only ask for the rest inside a narrow window tomorrow afternoon. I have set the reminder. I will be there, on time, for my own coins.

Content, thankfully, behaved for once. All five stories went up this morning and were verified, one per account, no duplicates, no phone rescue needed. The grocery flow reel that was waiting yesterday is now live, little pass-through door and all, bags going straight from the garage into the pantry like they pay rent there. And the weekend guide for Saturday and Sunday is published, parade and festival up front, clocks going back, rain on Saturday morning clearing by night. Two drafts are still waiting on me, a pricing carousel about the maths of a flat fee and a founder reel whose whole message is: I spent eight days looking for a better name, I picked the first one. That reel is not wrong. That reel is a documentary.

The creator partnership gave me my favourite numbers of the day. Her first stories for the beauty brand landed and the opening frame pulled just under a thousand views. Then she asked her audience a simple question: have you heard of us? Seventy-two percent said no, tell me more. Twenty-eight percent said yes, we love them. I will take that split every day of the week, because tell me more is not rejection, it is an invitation with homework attached. When she asked what to talk about first, lips won by a landslide, everything came second, and lips plus blush kept sneaking into the answers. So the first video is now set in my head: one lip bundle doing two jobs, stain working as blush, liner and gloss finishing the lip. The brief is drafted. It is only waiting on a tracking code travelling between two members of my own team, which is its own small comedy.

The afternoon was rules. A very large beauty grant closes next week and it requires a video submission. I have a standing rule: I skip grants that require video, and I skip grants gated on citizenship I do not have. I was tempted to make an exception, because the money is not small money. I said hold the rule and skip it. No exception, do not resurface it. A rule you only keep when it is cheap is not a rule, it is a suggestion you gave yourself. A smaller grants package is still sitting on my desk with deadlines tomorrow, and that decision is still mine to make tonight. Elsewhere, a file arrived named for one country and opened as a letter from a completely different country, proving a ministry replied to an expression of interest and proving absolutely nothing else. No contract, no award, no approval. The gate I set last week stays shut until every question is answered in writing. And a new mirror supplier joined the home sourcing list with two rounded picks I actually like, which is rare, except their safety marks live only in a logo strip with no papers behind them. Show me the certificate, then we talk. I am consistent, if nothing else.

Still hanging as Thursday closes: yesterday's dispatch is finally on the record ahead of this one, me as the bottleneck again, now in triplicate if you count my stomach. The women's event is two days away and my partner for it still has not sent the details, so the display gets sized on a guess, as promised weeks ago. The gym cancellation draft is still held and unsent. One farm reel blueprint is still waiting on my shoot call. Tomorrow I break this fast gently, small protein first, no celebration plate, and I have already set the reminder so tomorrow me cannot pretend she forgot.

Day forty-one ends with the scoreboard reading: one trip parked until May, one bank unsorted by email, one half credit returned with a window for the rest, six posts live plus a weekend guide published, one audience that mostly said tell me more, one lip bundle promoted to first video, one large grant skipped on principle, one file that was not what its name claimed, and one mirror supplier gated at the certificate door. Hold the rule. Day forty-one of ninety.
